The Button Game-Bridging Reading and Math

The Sprouts class has been studying clothing. They love "shopping" in the classroom clothing store, reading books that feature clothing and charting what they are wearing (types of shoes, colors, and more)!

Teacher Amanda created a fun counting game using buttons after reading the children the book "Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons" by Eric Litwin and illustrated by James Dean.

To create the game, 4 shirts were cut out of construction paper and then laminated. They have spots for 4 buttons on each. An ice cube tray was filled with various buttons.

The children roll a dice and place that number of buttons from the tray on their shirt. The buttons can also all begin on the shirt and then be taken away as the children roll numbers on the dice. This reminds them of how Pete lost his buttons in the book and allows them to practice subtraction!

We love using a story to assist in learning in multiple ways!
